Learning Creole
Hi,
I was wondering somebody might be able to suggest some books, tapes, websites that teach creole to an English speaker. I'm from Australia and although my mother is from Mauritius I cannot speak creole and would really love to learn. Thanks guys, please help! Daniel |

You are quite right RDR, it's like looking for a needle through a hay stack. No one is to blame for that non availability of creole materials through shops or any other means.
Creole language is a newly borne topic that is being studied for recommendations. However, we are fortunate to have this site where we freely converse in creole regardless our spelling. Rocco |

Thanks for the reply guys. Hopefully some more people see this whom might be able to help out. I've wanted to learn creole for years but as there are no other Mauritians I know of in Adelaide where I live, it makes it a bit hard to learn. I'll keep searching and post up anything I find, I have found these sites so far

Citation:
You might want to know that there's a dictionary of Mauritian Creole available ; the creole words/expressions are both explained in french and in english, and we even get etymological information about them. The authors are Philip BAKER & Vinesh HOOKOOMSING. The dictionary has been edited by Edions l'Harmattan. Hope u can find it on the web ! |

My aunt just went to Mauritius with my Grandma around Christmas time, and got me:
Diksyoner Kreol Angle Ledikasyon Pu Travayer Prototip/Prototype Dictionary Mauritian Creole-English ISBN 99903-33-55-6 and ![]() MAURITIUS: Its Creole Language Lee, Jacques K. An 'ultimate Creole phrase book and dictionary', with some unusual features. It comprises a phrase book for tourists in the first part. This features a simplified presentation of the language. Thus famille [family] is shown as fami; pacques [easter] as pac, cadeau as cado, etc. Part two looks at the origins, history and evolution of the various languages spoken on the island. An English-Creole dictionary is included. There are also notes on Mauritian gastronomy, idioms, expression and swear words. 160pp, UK. NAUTILUS PUBLISHING CO., 0951129627 1999 Paperback Both would probably be helpful for what you want, especially the latter. Not sure exactly where she got them in Mauritius, but I told her the National library of Mauritius was selling the dictionary: http://www.gov.mu/portal/sites/ncb/m...rary/sale.html |

Daniel, J, I would suggest 'Philip Baker', he is an english man who has been working on the creole language for quite a while now; he has published a number of books on creole language - even a dictionary. I won't provide links, as it is easy to insert his name in Google search engine and voila... Philip est la!
