Pauvre piti !!!

Mauritian teenage mother in UK risks deportation

Judge David Paget, QC, indicated he would not jail her. Instead she would return to court for sentencing on March 14 and is then likely to be deported.

Manisha was still 17, heavily pregnant, with her lover's child and had kept the secret to herself for more than eight months, when she boarded a plane to Europe last year. First she flew to Ireland with an uncle before going on to London on her own. She gave birth to a boy she named Harsh in a rented flat on Mitcham Lane, in Streatham, South London. The baby boy, barely a day old, was dumped in a plastic bag.

It was a shocking discovery for the 23-year-old Chitra Boodhun, who was on her way to work on a bitterly cold March 5, 2007, morning. She was alerted by a neighbour to something lying on a roof opposite her flat. It was till-breathing of baby boy whose only protection from the weather was the plastic shopping bag wrapped around him.

The baby was lying on the gravel roof of a balcony shared between her flat and a dry-cleaners.

She said: "He was left in a plastic bag and he was freezing. The baby looked dead but we did all we could for him and wrapped him up.

When the police and the paramedics arrived they took him away and that was the last we saw of him."

The baby was taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting where it died hours later.

Manisha was arrested shortly afterwards and the news of the tragedy made its way halfway across the world back to her home village, in Montagne Blanche, Mauritius, with terrible consequences for two families.

She had named a local man, 24-year-old Kishan Mohit, as the baby's father and two officers from Scotland Yard's child homicide command travelled to Mauritius to carry out a DNA test on him to prove paternity. But by the time they got there, he was already in prison and his family had been moved from the village which was home to both families to escape the revenge of an angry mob.

The police believe Kishan had asked Manisha's father permission to marry her but had been denied. Despite this, the couple had continued seeing each other and Manisha became pregnant.

After several angry confrontations, Kishan fire bombed Manisha's dad's car and was arrested after several witnesses came forward to implicate him. It was while Manisha's father was waiting at the local police station to give his statement that he was tracked down by Kishan's brother Kiran.

He stabbed him to death with a kitchen knife in front of witnesses, including several stunned police officers and his son Vickram - just six days after the grandson he never saw died in a Tooting hospital.
